My backups are regularly failing due to VDM (VMware Virtual Disk manager) crashing. The backup starts, snapshot is taken and then I get "VMware Virtual Disk manager has stopped working" during copy stage.

When this happens all backups fail - it started occurring around a month ago but the went away. However it has now returned even though there have been no changes to the client or server environments.

I'm running vBackup 4.0.1.2747 on a Windows 10 64-bit laptop against ESXi 5.5.0. I'm using VMware Virtual Disk manager 5.0.0.6165.

Any ideas?

Can you try upgrading VMware Virtual Disk Development Kit to version 5.5.4?

Please let us know if this resolves your issue.

Also, you might want to upgrade vBackup to version 4.0.2. This will not resolve the error with VMware Virtual Disk Manager, but vBackup v4.0.2 includes a new setting that disables VMware Virtual Disk Manager logging by default. This may be useful if VMware Virtual Disk Manager is crashing as it may cause it's log to fill completely and end up filling the system drive on your backup server (which may then cause other problems).

Clearing the VDDK log file has worked previously at getting around the error so I've upgraded to vBackup 4.0.2 and disabled VDDK logging to see if that helps.

Problem is that the problem is sporadic - either backups work or they don't but at least when they don't then they all fail.

I'll let you know if this corrects the issue.

Thanks.

PS what versions of VDDK can I run with VMWare ESXi 5.5.0?

The versioning system that VMware has begun to use for their APIs in recent years is a little misleading. Actually the version of the APIs you use is based on the integration solution, not the vSphere version. We built vBackup 4.x on VMware Virtual Disk Manager in VDDK 5.5.4 and VMware Disk Mount in VDDK 5.1.4. Starting with vBackup 4.0.1 you have the ability to specify a different version of VDDK to be used for VMware Virtual Disk Manager and VMware Disk Mount and we recommend versions 5.5.4 and 5.1.4 (respectively).

Hope this helps.

Thanks - I'm going to stick with my current versions for now to see how I get on. I think the VDDK logging was the source of the issue but I can't prove it, especially as there was plenty of disk space free (many Gb!).
