I am repeatedly getting the following error when restoring from a backup:

Unable to upload configuration (VMX) file for new virtual machine to database. sh: syntax error: unexpected "(".
Lost connection
.

I am running vBackup 4.0.1.2747 with client 4.0.1.4943 against ESXi 5.5.0 Build 1331830

Thanks,

Will

What value are you using for the new virtual machine's name?

What is the name of the datastore you are restoring the backup to?

Original backed up VM is "Windows Server 2012 R2 (x64) Forms 11gR2"
New VM Name is "Windows Server 2012 R2 (x64) Forms 11gR2_160208_163040"
Target Datastore name is "datastore4"

(all without double quotes)

If I run the restore with new VM name without "(x64)" component then it errors with scp: ambiguous target

Remove the spaces and special characters "(" and ")" from the VM name and you should be good to go. You can rename the VM via VMware vSphere Client once the restore completes (if you wish).

By removing the spaces and special characters during the restore process this allows the VM's files to be created and named properly. When you rename the VM via VMware vSphere Client you are essentially changing the label leaving the VM's files named as is.

VMware recommends, as a best practice, against (but does not inherently block) using spaces and special characters in object names as this can cause issues with integration utilities.

Hope this helps!

THanks - that appears to have worked.
