Hi. I have set up a few jobs which complete successfully, except giving an error:

Unable to ping SMTP server, e-mail notification disabled

I have configured the email notification tab in settings, and the test completes successfully ...however, I don't get the email notification sent to me.

Why does it have to/try to ping the email server? Why would the test complete successfully, but fail when the job is executed?

Any help would be great.

Many thanks,
Doug.

Hi Doug,

Can you try upgrading to vBackup version 4.0.1 and see if this resolves the issue for you. In version 4.0.1 we revised the SMTP server connection validation process to use a socket connection test versus a simple ping test.

Please let us know.

Hi. thanks for that. I have now upgraded to 4.0.1. I did notice however that in the comparison list email notification is not available in the new free version ...so I assume it won't work anyway.

PS, I do have to say that I tried quite hard, but could not find the release notes for 4.0.1. I wanted to know the changes since 4.0.0 and also any upgrade instructions from 4.0.0 to 4.0.1. Having installed 4.0.1, it then informs me on the welcome screen that I should have backed up the Thinware database before upgrading ...I have to say that this was not made clear to me.

Anyway, I did manage to restore the previous version's DB ...I assume that your program automatically backs up the DB before installation

...anyway, just thought I'd let you know my thoughts.

Regards,
Doug.

Doug,

You are right. E-mail notification is not supported in vBackup Standard Edition. It has always been this way though. This did not change in version 4.0.1.

Release notes for version 4.0.1 are now available in the Thinware knowledge base (link follows).

Yes. The uninstaller for vBackup will create a backup of the vBackup database before uninstall.

You can find full documentation for upgrading vBackup in the vBackup Administrator's Guide. The Administrator's Guide is available in vBackup Client under Help > Administrator's Guide. The Administrator's Guide is also available in the online vBackup documentation (link follows).
