I am running vBackup on Windows 7 x64 and I am trying to backup one of my VMs from my ESXi 5.5 host. I followed the instructions but when I start the backup job, it stops right before it begins copying the VM disk file for no apparent reason. See the text from the console window below. I checked the log file but there's nothing there that helps. The vBackup client window says "failed on error" under the Result column. Thanks for any assistance.

After some troubleshooting, I discovered that when the console stops at the "Creating Disk" line it appears to be transferring data from the ESX host to the client, there's just no way of knowing that it is doing that, but when looking at the storage location I designated to save the backups, you can see multiple vmdk files being created which are 2GB each. However, I have a network traffic meter that tells me no data transfer is happening. However, I left the backup run its course and after a couple of hours it ended with this:

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hard disk 1: [datastore1] Win7x86_ADM/Win7x86_ADM-000001.vmdk
Creating disk 'E:\VMBackups\Win7x86_ADM_RBHS\150218_105826\Win7x86_ADM-000001.

Convert: 0% done.

Critical: Unable to complete backup. Please review task history on host, log
file and information above for specific errors and run vBackup using
the '-help' switch to display syntax and usage information if needed
(e.g. at a command prompt type 'vbackup -help' and press enter).

Press any key to exit.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

After it does the cleanup it actually removes all those 2GB vmdk files it had created in the backup location so the backup location is empty in the end. I have a feeling that those 2GB files are just dummy files being created that contain no actual data because as I said earlier, my network meter shows no activity during the time it is supposed to be doing the transfer.

This error is documented under troubleshooting backup job execution errors in the online vBackup Documentation.

http://www.thinware.net/Products/Thin...

If you are using Thinware vBackup Advanced or Professional the simplest fix is to just enable compression in the job's settings. If you are using Thinware vBackup Standard you may need to convert the VM's disks to thin-provisioned (thick-provisioned disks are not supported with Thinware vBackup Standard).

Hope this helps!
