I get following error when trying to backup my VM´s after reinstall of ESXi and restore of Thinware backup server. My Thinware backup server is a VM and backed up just with Thinware. I use VM converter for restore and do it as administrator.

"Unable to complete backup. Unable to retrieve virtual machine ID. Error while creating 'virtualmachine' file. WARNING - POTENTIAL SECURITY BREACH!"

I get the error every time I reinstall ESXi and only scratch install of backup server solves the problem. I have SSH enabled.

Whats´s the problem ? What kind of security issue is it ?

Easy fix. All you need to do is clear PuTTY's host key cache and you should be good to go.

vBackup uses Plink (PuTTY Link) to send commands to the ESXi host via SSH. The first time and SSH connection is made via Plink the host's fingerprint (or host key) is cached in the Windows registry. Since you rebuilt your ESXi host server it's host key changed and Plink is warning you of this.

To clear the PuTTY cache on your vBackup server you simply need to run the following command at a command prompt:

putty -cleanup

Note: Make sure you include the full path to putty.exe if you do not have a path environment variable configured to the folder it is located.

If you do not have PuTTY on your vBackup server you can download it from the following URL:

Please let us know if we can help further.

Thank you,

vBackup Team

Hey guys,

I was struggling with this issue, too.

I usually use Putty Portable for my SSH connections. With Putty Portable the command putty.exe -cleanup does not work.
You have to install the version of Putty which is mentioned in the earlier posts and execute the command, this will work.

Sorry for my bad English, I am a bit out of practice.

Cheers
