A number of my backup jobs are reporting negative compression. I'm using vBackup 5 and ESXi 6.7

Backup Summary:
- Files:
- Security.vmx
- Security.vmx.backup
- Security.nvram
- Security.vmdk
- vBackup.xml
- catalog
- Size Before Compression: 80.00 GB
- Size After Compression: 160.79 GB
- Space Saved on /vmfs/volumes/Backups03: -84713336 KB
- Compression Ratio: -100.99%
- Elapsed Time: 56 minutes and 8 seconds
- Speed: 24.32 MB/s

The backups seem to be working just getting bloated by the compression.

Any ideas on why this would be happening would be appreciated.

Hi Rob,

We are working to reproduce this and have been unsuccessful so far.

This may be due to the storage solution you are using for backups and it not supporting VMware's thin-provisioned hard disk file type.

Can you please reply and provide more details on your environment?

What type of solution are you using for your backup storage? If possible please provide the hardware/software vendor, model, and firmware/software versions please.
