Hi Swing,
Thank you for your questions and feedback.
Please understand that the changes you mentioned in Thinware vBackup 5.0 are simply due to changes in VMware vSphere. In order to support changes VMware implemented beginning with VMware vSphere 6.5 we had to adjust the way the backup process works. Thinware vBackup 5.0 still supports VMware vSphere 6.0 and older with all of the same features and functionality as Thinware vBackup 4.0.
It is possible to backup to local storage (hard disks attached to the backup server) with Thinware vBackup 5.0. To do this you simply need to configure an NFS share on the local storage and utilize the new “host server accessible” backup repository type introduced in Thinware vBackup 5.0.
As far as a free offering for Thinware vBackup... In addition to still supporting Thinware vBackup 4.0 for VMware vSphere 6.0 and older, we are also working to add support for VMware vSphere 6.5 and newer with the Standard (free) edition Thinware vBackup. We are working diligently to get this functionality added in the next major release. This again this is due to changes in VMware vSphere 6.5—changes outside of our control.
We hope this helps. Please let us know if there is anything else we can assist with.
