I have the same problem. ESXi 4.1.0, 348481
VM with Used Storage: 31,01Gb DataStore with 49,45Gb Free
When the backup starts, I see that Provisioned Storage for de VM grows to 62 Gb approx.
I don't know if it's necessary to have +62Gb free or +32Gb free in the datastore..

I also have the problem (with vbackup 3.x und 4.x) on two different server installations.

If the compression is set to NONE the backup stops after approx 20-30 Min. The free space on the backup target is more than 2x greater than the source machine in the ESX server

UPDATE to my post.

I have two servers. On both is it reproducable that if I dissable the compression in vbackup it stops at the end of the copy-proccess with the 2GB vmdks part file to the backup target. Therefor I see that this is not a problem with low disk-space on the backup target-

If I set compressionm to BASIC or ADV the backup will finish without problems.

I also try differedd versions of VMware Virtual Disk Development Kit 5.1, 5.1.2 etc...

Also I can reproduce it with vbackup 0.3 and the new 4.0

Enabling Basic or Advance compression is not an option if you are using a Standard license. There has to be another way to fix this error.

In my testing I have found that this error happens pretty consistently when you have a combination of the following:

- Thick provisioned virtual disks on the host server (may not cause error if disks have minimal free space)
- Compression Level is set to None on the job in vBackup (only option with Standard Edition)
- Backup target is on USB 2.0 (or slower) external hard drive (results in slower write speeds)
- Backup target is on network share (results in slower write speeds)
- Backup server is running 32-bit Windows

I have also found that changing one or more of these usually resolves the issue (e.g. using USB 3.0 external disks or internal disks on backup server as the backup target).

The problem is that this is a VMware VDDK issue and probably the only fix at this time is to change something in your environment to improve performance. Other more expensive products like Veeam, Acronis, PHD Virtual, etc. are coupled tighter with VMware’s VADP APIs and that allows them to better account for and handle performance hiccups (but this comes at a price).
