I made a stupid error when setting up the ESXi5.5 host in vbackup, for ssh I used port 21 and of course this was the problem of network connection unable to find ID, removed the host and made new connection without providing any port numbers vbackup used defaults. Working :)

I know this post is from ages ago, however I am getting the same error as the original poster:

E Unable to complete backup. Unable to retrieve virtual machine ID. Error while creating 'virtualmachine' file. Skipping invalid VM '29'.
Temporary files successfully removed.
Backup data folder deleted in cleaning up after job failure.

I have tried a couple of VMs and get the same results. SSH is enabled on the host and its running ESXi 6.0.0, 4192238 which is the very latest patch level.
